Ballota macedonica is a perennial plant with a woody, moderately branched stem covered with numerous glandular hairs. The leaves are gray-green, ovate, serrated and attached to long petioles. Red or pink flowers develop in the leaf axils. It is found in open dry areas, along roadsides, on limestone outcrops and cliffs. In Macedonia it grows in the central, western and southwestern regions.
