The name of this plant comes from the Japanese word gin-kyo. Ginkgo originates from China, Korea, and Japan. According to fossil findings, this plant existed as far back as the Mesozoic era, when it was widespread in Europe and America. Glacial processes during the Diluvium period destroyed its populations worldwide, except in China’s Sichuan province, where it still grows in natural conditions today.
