Lemon balm is a perennial herbaceous plant with a square, upright stem. It can grow from 30 to 100 cm in height. It is believed to originate from the Eastern Mediterranean, but it is also found in the Caucasus, parts of Iran, and extends to Northwestern Siberia. It is cultivated as a spice plant and is also widespread in other parts of Europe, Asia, and North America. It grows along boundaries, stone walls, near settlements, and alongside shrubs. Medical research has confirmed that lemon balm has strong sedative properties, similar to those of peppermint and chamomile.
