Koshanin’s violet

Koshanin’s violet is a subendemic plant in the flora of Macedonia. It is named after the famous Serbian botanist Nedeljko Košanin (1874-1934). It belongs to the Violaceae family, or the violet family. This plant can be found at four locations along the gorge of the Treska River. Some of its populations were destroyed during the construction of the access road between the village of Nova Breznica and the Kozjak Dam. Unlike other species of violets found in our area, which are herbaceous plants, this species of violet is a shrub-like plant. It grows in the cracks of vertical cliffs and is part of the plant communities that form the chasmophytic vegetation. It blooms early in spring, around the end of March and the beginning of April, with beautiful violet flowers. Specimens of this subendemic plant successfully thrive in the Botanical Garden.
