Macedonian National Herbarium

The Macedonian National Herbarium is located at the Institute of Biology, Faculty of Natural Sciences and Mathematics in Skopje, and has been in existence since the establishment of the faculty in 1946. The founder of the herbarium is Academician Kiril Micevski, a Full Professor of Plant Systematics, Phylogeny, and Phytocenology. In 2009, the herbarium was officially registered as the Macedonian National Herbarium (MKNH).

The Macedonian National Herbarium is one of the largest herbariums in the Balkans, housing a collection of over 150,000 herbarium specimens. Some of these specimens, mostly collected by botanists and florists from other countries, date back to the early 20th century.

The significance of the herbarium collection is further emphasized by the presence of numerous holotypes—specimens of plants from which new species or taxa have been described for science. While some of these holotypes are also held in herbaria in other countries, a large number of them are housed in our herbarium.
