The Caucasian walnut is a deciduous tree, 20-30 meters tall, with large, compound leaves. The flowers are inconspicuous and grouped in hanging catkins. The fruits are single-seeded walnuts with wings, which is how the genus got its name, derived from the Greek words pteron, meaning wing, and karyon, meaning walnut. The distribution range of this species extends from the Caucasus to northern Iran.
