The name of this plant comes from the Greek word „kykas“, which the famous philosopher Teophrastus used to refer to an unknown type of palm. It is native to East Asia, from the south of Japan to the island of Java. The trunk of this plant is not higher than 3.5 meters and reminds us of a palm tree, but it is not closely related to palms, but to another evolutionary ancient gymnosperm plants. The Botanical Garden in Skopje has a 60 year old specimen of this palm.
