Known by the locals as “Christ’s thorn,” this plant is believed to be one of the species that may have been used to make the crown of thorns that Jesus had to wear during his crucifixion. It is a shrubby, poisonous plant native to Madagascar. The stem is covered with spines that protect the plant from herbivores.
