The wild chestnut is a tree that can grow up to 30 meters high, with a broad and branched crown. The leaves are large and usually divided into 7 parts. The flowers are white and grouped in clusters at the top of the branches. The wild chestnut is a Balkan relict species, which in Macedonia grows naturally along the course of the river Crn Drim and its tributaries, as well as on Mount Galicica (Dlabok Dol) and Mount Bistra (Mala Reka and Suvi Dol). Although it is a rare species, the wild chestnut is widely used as a honey plant and as an ornamental tree in parks, gardens and urban avenues. It blooms from May to June, right after the leaves appear.
